Tucked away just off Whitehall in the heart of Westminster, Great Scotland Yard Hotel is one of London’s most storied addresses — a boutique luxury hotel where history is not just preserved, but woven into the experience.
The site itself dates back centuries and is widely associated with visiting Scottish royalty, from which the street takes its name. By the 19th century, the area became synonymous with law enforcement, when Metropolitan Police established its original headquarters nearby in 1829 under Sir Robert Peel. While the current building came later, the name “Scotland Yard” became globally recognised, immortalised in the works of writers such as Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
The Grade II listed Edwardian building that stands today was completed in 1910, later serving as a military recruitment office and Ministry of Defence library before reopening as a hotel in 2019 as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. Today, its design thoughtfully nods to this layered past, blending classic architecture with playful, story-led interiors.

The Room
We stayed in the Sherlock Suite, inspired by Britain’s most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes.
The suite is elegantly designed, with a calm, neutral palette and generous natural light throughout. A separate living area features a dining table, lounge seating, and a marble fireplace, while the bedroom is anchored by a striking four-poster king-sized bed.
Details are well considered: a Nespresso machine with tea and coffee facilities, an inclusive minibar replenished daily, and thoughtful storage throughout. The marble bathroom continues the sense of understated luxury, with dual sinks, a bathtub, walk-in shower, Jo Loves amenities, and a TOTO toilet — a small but appreciated touch.
Altogether, the space feels refined, comfortable, and quietly indulgent — more restorative than theatrical.
For those travelling with pets, Great Scotland Yard Hotel offers a genuinely welcoming approach. Charlotte was provided with a dog bed and bowls, and while she quickly claimed the human furniture as her own, it’s clear the hotel is well set up for canine guests.
The hotel’s central location also makes it ideal for dog-friendly city stays, with nearby walks around St James’s Park and along the Thames.

The Food
Afternoon tea is served in The Parlour, an intimate and atmospheric space inspired by Victorian explorers.
During our visit, the menu was created in collaboration with Floris London, drawing on the Bergamotto di Positano fragrance. Notes of citrus, orange blossom, and soft marine tones were subtly reflected throughout the menu.
The experience began with savouries including courgette and mint frittata and stracciatella with smoked salmon and caviar. Warm scones followed, served with Cornish clotted cream and orange jam.
The sweet selection was particularly strong, featuring a rich Torta Caprese, a delicate Delizia al Limone, and a baba with orange blossom and peach cream — all well-balanced and thoughtfully executed.
To accompany the tea, we opted for a Pomello Spritz — light, refreshing, and well suited to the citrus-led menu.
Charlotte, meanwhile, enjoyed her own Dog Afternoon Tea, created in collaboration with Talula Eats. Served on a miniature three-tier stand, it included organic meat and vegetables, a dog-friendly cake, and biscuit treats — a charming and well-considered addition.
Breakfast the following morning was served in The Yard, offering a continental buffet alongside a choice of one hot dish from the menu.
The setting is relaxed yet polished, and service was efficient without feeling rushed. Charlotte was welcome to join, which added to the ease of the overall experience.

The hotel’s location is one of its greatest strengths. Set moments from Whitehall, it places you within easy walking distance of many of London’s most recognisable landmarks, including Trafalgar Square and Big Ben.
Nearby Underground stations such as Charing Cross station and Embankment station provide excellent connectivity across the city.
Overall, Great Scotland Yard Hotel offers a distinctive boutique stay in central London, combining rich history with contemporary comfort and a playful design narrative.
While it may not have the scale of larger luxury hotels, its character, location, and attention to detail make it a compelling choice — particularly for those seeking something more individual, and for travellers looking for a dog-friendly hotel in Westminster.
With thanks to Great Scotland Yard Hotel for hosting us.
