For our girls night out last Friday, we decided to try out Allan Pickett at The Sanderson Hotel in London’s Fitzrovia. The Sanderson’s first summer restaurant residency that started on 5th June is set in the private courtyard, with a heated outdoor terrace and the charming and peaceful garden. The new menu is described to be a mix of classic and contemporary cooking, using seasonal British produce.
We went for the a la carte menu which is divided into three courses. For my starter, I ordered the Cornish crab with pressed watermelon and Petite Lucques tapenade. A light and refreshing dish, which is perfect for summer. And I also really liked the crunchy little croquette on the side. The scallops were fresh and accompanied well with the creamy avocado puree with a subtle acidity from the apples. The pan fried pork terrine was also tender and quite tasty.

Duck dishes are always a winner for me, and me choice of main did not disappoint – delicious moist and tender meat. I particularly liked the presentation for the seared red mullet which had a lovely, delicate texture and flavour. It was served with some tantalizing razor clams and a much richer tasting oxtail meat in the onion farcie. The guinea fowl did not look quite as exciting as I imagined it to be, but still a rather flavourful and hearty dish.

And finally for dessert, we ordered three to share between us. Usually more partial towards sweet desserts, I have come to enjoy cheese more these days. I do think that it could have done with a few more crispbread accompaniments on the side. A nice little selection of cheese, and the truffle honey was pretty good.
The sable tart of strawberries was really pretty, and surprisingly much lighter than I expected. Strawberry desserts are always ideal for summer, and it was undoubtedly my favourite dessert of the evening.
The caramelized apricots with brioche unfortunately didn’t quite do it for me.

Service was a bit hit and miss that evening, but overall we had a pleasant meal, with a couple of favourite dishes that I would not mind having more of again.
I shall be looking forward to the opening of Piquet, due to open later this summer.
